New York State of Poetry

Teachers! Register today for New York State of Poetry, a new, FREE program to engage high school students across New York State with the art of poetry.

Students will be invited to read and write poems with a chance to be published in a statewide anthology and read their poems at National Poetry Month readings.

This program is offered by Teachers & Writers Collaboration in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts.

Read.

Teachers/Community Organizations receive resources to engage their students with the NYSP Poetry Collection—a curated selection of classic and contemporary poems. Resources include:

Write.

Students write poetry inspired by poems in the NYSP Poetry Collection. This can be a response, an “after” poem, a golden shovel, or another form that takes inspiration from a poem in the collection.

Students can also participate in two virtual workshops led by a New York State poet. One workshop will be generative, and the second will be focused on revision. All registered schools will be invited to participate, and the workshops will also be available as recordings.

Publish.

Registered schools nominate a student poem to represent their school in a statewide anthology. All participating schools and students will receive a printed copy of the anthology.

Students will be invited to read their original poems at one of two in-person poetry readings in NYC and another location (TBD).

In addition, a panel will select a winning poem and a runner-up poem from the anthology. The author of the winning poem will receive a $200 cash prize and $500 for their school library. The runner-up will receive a $100 cash prize and $200 for their school library.
