Teachers & Writers Magazine

Subject Matter
Teachers & Writers magazine welcomes articles about teaching the art of writing in kindergarten through college and in non-classroom settings. Teachers & Writers also welcomes submissions on related topics, such as oral history, translation, and teaching writing in combination with other arts. Articles should present innovative techniques and ideas or shine a new light on familiar subject matter. Teachers & Writers publishes both practical and theoretical work and looks for writing that is concise, lively, and geared toward a general audience.

Length
Articles typically range from 2 to 10 typewritten, double-spaced pages (500 to 2,500 words). There is no limit on the length of articles submitted to Teachers & Writers; however, long articles may be significantly edited to fit available space in the magazine.

Audience
Most readers of Teachers & Writers teach writing at the elementary, secondary, or postsecondary level.

Payment
Contributors receive a small honorarium, payable upon publication, and copies of the magazine. All submissions are on spec and there is no kill fee.

Rights
All rights revert to the author upon publication.

We prefer submissions to be sent electronically, as an e-mail attachment, to tw-magazine. We will also accept submissions mailed to: Teachers & Writers Magazine, 520 Eighth Ave., Ste. 2020, New York, NY 10018.

Teachers & Writers Collaborative Books

Subject Matter
Teachers & Writers Collaborative (T&W) publishes books that address one or more of the following:

  • Teaching writing in kindergarten through college classrooms
  • Teaching writing in non-classroom settings—to adults, teens, children
  • Teaching specific genres (e.g., memoir, poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, essay, journalism, graphic books/comics)
  • Teaching writing across artistic disciplines (e.g. writing for or about theater, film TV, video; music, dance, visual arts)
  • Teaching writing across the curriculum (e.g., in social studies, history, science)
  • Teaching about an author and using the writer’s work to prompt student writing
  • Teaching about the writing of a community and using examples to prompt student writing (e.g., African-American authors, women writers, writing about the immigrant experience)
  • Analysis of a genre
  • Resources for the writing classroom, student, and teacher (e.g., guidebooks to terms, genres)

Audience
Books published by T&W are relevant to one or more of the following audiences:

  • K–12 teachers and students
  • Writers who teach in K–12 schools
  • Undergraduate writing instructors and students
  • Individual students of writing
  • Writers who teach individual students
  • Leaders and participants in writing workshops

Submission Format
Manuscripts and inquiries should be mailed to Teachers & Writers Collaborative, 520 Eighth Ave., Ste. 2020, New York, NY 10018. Submissions should include a table of contents, introduction or preface, and a sample chapter, along with a cover letter including the book’s anticipated length, the intended audience, and any relevant information about the proposed design (e.g., photos, charts, etc.). The cover letter should describe what distinguishes the book from others already published. Include a résumé and a self-addressed, stamped envelope sufficient for the return of the manuscript.

Bechtel Prize

The Bechtel Prize is awarded annually in recognition of an exemplary article or essay related to:

  • creative writing education
  • literary studies
  • the profession of writing

The winning essay appears in Teachers & Writers magazine, and the author receives a $2,500 honorarium. Entries selected as finalists for the Bechtel Prize may also be published in Teachers & Writers. The authors of essays selected as Bechtel finalists share honoraria totaling $1,000.
